From August 26 to 29, 2025, the annual meeting of the European Ophthalmic Epidemiological Consortium (E3) was held in the city of Dijon, France.
The event brought together leading epidemiologists, ophthalmologists, biostatisticians, and public health researchers from universities and scientific centers across Europe and other countries. The primary goal of the meeting was to coordinate efforts to study the prevalence, risk factors, and socio-economic burden of major eye diseases among the European population.
The consortium's work was organized in the format of plenary sessions and scientific symposia. The key themes of the event were:
Research on the link between retinal microangiopathy and cerebrovascular diseases.
Updates on major cohort studies and registries. In particular, Professor Jost Jonas (Institut de la Myopie, France) presented the results of population studies conducted in the Southern Urals by our institute.
Discussion of current data on rates of vision loss, prognoses for various ophthalmic pathologies, risk stratification, and the impact of diseases on patients' quality of life (e.g., driving, risk of blindness).
Particular attention was paid to the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning methods in ophthalmology and epidemiology.
The event was of a coordinating nature. Within its framework, successful negotiations were held with leading European research groups, including Queen's University Belfast (UK), the Institute of Clinical Sciences (UK), the University of Bonn (Germany), the Erasmus University Medical Center (Netherlands), and the Institut de la Myopie (France). As a result of the meetings, agreements were concluded to conduct joint scientific research.
